Fracking & Pipeline Strategy Meeting

WHERE: Lexington Public Library Central Branch, Conference Room A

WHY: To develop a coordinated & strategic approach for our communities to address fracking & pipeline issues throughout Kentucky

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: people who are active or ready to become active on fracking and pipeline issues in Kentucky. This will will be a working session where we anticipate each participant will leave with action steps for how they will engage in this work locally or in support of statewide efforts. Register Now & please share this announcement with others who should be there.

WHAT:Below are the outcomes we are aiming to achieve during the strategy session:

  1. Share a landscape analysis of communities impacted by fracking, pipelines, waste disposal or other related issues as well as known organizing efforts to inform our analysis & planning.

  2. Present and align on a power analysis of decision-makers, opinion-leaders and others to target through coordinated state and local action.

  3. Outline priority goals, workplans & responsibilities for key strategies including: media/messaging, education/public awareness/outreach (educational tour, counties not yet active, etc), legal (local legislation/ordinances, property rights, etc), state & federal advocacy (legislative session, RECLAIM Act, etc)

  4. Build relationships across communities and engage people from as many impacted communities as possible.

HOW: Below is a draft agenda for the day outlining distinct sessions in which we will work to meet the outcomes described above.


 9:30 a.m. ARRIVAL / Coffee & Breakfast Snacks Available

10 a.m. OPENING

  • Welcome
  • Introductions
  • Review of Meeting Purpose, Outcomes & Process
  • Meeting Agreements

10:30 a.m. LANDSCAPE & POWER ANALYSES

  • Landscape Analysis of Fracking & Pipeline Issues & Places where communities are engaged across Kentucky
  • Power Analysis of who to target & organize among decision-makers, opinion-leaders, and affected communities
  • Interactive Feedback, Questions & Discussion including opportunity for everyone to add/edit/engage with the analyses
  • Prep / Context for Afternoon Session with Strategy Group Leaders

12:15 p.m. LUNCH (brown bag, bring your own, or local restaruants nearby) "get to know you" time

1:30 p.m. STRATEGY GROUPS (~75 minutes)

People will break out into groups according to where they have experience and/or are willing to take on responsibilities & action steps coming out of the meeting. Groups are co-facilitated by two leaders who can commit to be responsible for guiding the work of that strategy group for a defined period of time. People will identify goals, outline a workplan and identify people to be responsible for various aspects of the workplan -- ideally this will be captured in a prepared template that will be projected live for everyone to see as it is created by the group. Groups will include:

  • Media/Messaging
  • Education/Public Awareness/Outreach
  • Legal (local legislation/ordinances, property rights)
  • State & Federal Advocacy (legislative session, RECLAIM Act, etc)
  • Other?

2:45 p.m. BREAK with Snacks Available

3:05 p.m. STRATEGY COORDINATION

  • Groups share their plans -- each leader reports back & others have opportunity to ask questions / add suggestions
  • Address any questions or issues for overall coordination

4:35 p.m. CLOSING

  • Evaluation
  • Closing Circle -- Affirmations, Thanks, Inspirations, Etc!

5:00 p.m. ADJOURN
