CKY members meet with the new city council members about voting rights

This January the Lexington city council welcomed four new members; Shevawn Akers (district 2), Jennifer Scutchfield (district 7), Jennifer Mossotti (district 9) and Harry Clarke (district 10). Central Kentucky KFTC members have been very busy over the last couple of weeks meeting with the new city council members about voting rights.

Members shared their desire to see the Lexington-Fayette urban county council pass a resolution in support of former felons regaining their right to vote. The conversations have been very positive and there has been a lot of support. KFTC members Abigail Dority and Sarah Thomas met with council member Scutchfield on Tuesday to share why they're personally invested in this campaign. "My brother is a former felon and he had to move out of state so that he could vote." explained Dority. Thomas shared the story of a couple of her coworkers who are former felons. "They've sent in the application seeking a pardon from the governor and it's been ignored multiple times. They just never hear anything."

Council member Chris Ford from district 1 has agreed to sponsor the resolution and chapter members are hoping to start focusing on the language. "What is most important to us is that the resolution say two things: First, that the city of Lexington believes that once a person serves their time they should be allowed to register to vote. Second, the city of Lexington believes that Kentuckians deserve to have the opportunity to vote on this issue and are calling for the bill to be heard in Frankfort." - CKY member Greg Capillo.

One way that you can be a big help to this campaign is by contacting your council member and urging them to support this resolution when it comes up.
